Have you ever landed in a bunker only to find when you approach where your ball has finished that you can only see the top of it?
There is a ring of sand around the ball spaced about one inch or 2 1/2 cm from it. The fried egg lie.
You also notice that there is not much green between the edge of the bunker and the golf hole.
A very difficult shot indeed.
Perhaps the best is to get the ball out of the bunker and take two puts. Which is the usual approach and the first rule for good bunker play. However even this is going to be a challenge.
There is a way to play this shot and even get the ball close to the pin.
The method is totally different from the normal bunker golf shot.
Here is how to play this shot.
You set up in the normal way.
The idea is to hit the rim of sand that surrounds the ball. Hit it with a steeply descending blow.
Firstly, open your club face to its fullest extent. This means that you could balance a glass of water on it. Keep the club face open at all times. Do not let it close during the shot. Remember you have to be able to balance the glass of water on the face when the face reaches waist height on the follow through.
This time however, there is no follow through.
OK, you have opened you club face. Now you are going to use your wrists to make the club head descend and hit the sand very nearly vertically. This is one time when you will use your wrists on your back swing.
Take the club back with your arms AND wrists. The wrists break with a quick movement.
Now concentrate on hitting the ridge of sand, or failing this, hit the sand about one inch behind the ball.
Your descent is steep so that you can drive the club head deeply under the ball. Because the club is digging deeply under the ball, a follow through will not be possible.
When you hit this golf shot, you are not only hitting with your arms. You are also concentrating on hitting strongly with your right hand. (Right handers).
So, the whole golf shot is very wristy. Breaking your wrists quickly on the back swing and then driving with your right hand on the down stroke. Hit the sand quite hard. Not an easy shot, but if you play it this way, you will have a great deal of success in at least getting the ball onto the green.
