Clippers: Kaman Granted Long-Term Extension

The Clippers reached a long-term contract agreement with centre Chris Kaman on Sunday night.

The deal offers the productive 7-foot player a five-year, $50-million extension. Coach Mike Dunleavy made the guaranteed offer to Rob Pelinka, who is the agent of Kaman, after the team’s final day of training camp at Santa Barbara City College. Under NBA rules, Kaman has to take a decision before Oct. 31st.

If Kaman refuses the offer, he would become a restricted free agent after this season. The Clippers could match any offer he received from another team. Kaman has had already a salary of almost $3.5 million in the final season of his contract. But he could decline the offer and sign a one-year only deal with the Clippers this summer allowing him to become an unrestricted free agent after the season of 2007-08.

As for the Clippers, the team was waited until forward Elton Brand and swingman Corey Maggette signed offer sheets with other teams before matching. But the managing committee decided to take a proactive approach with Kaman. Owner Donald T. Sterling, General Manager Elgin Baylor, Dunleavy and Andy Roeser, executive vice president, agreed together last week on a proposal averaging $10 million. According to this agreement Kaman’s salary would increase to almost $8.5 million next season will earn bonuses according to his performance.

Despite their desire to lock-in Kaman, the Clippers will very unlikely increase their offer to Kaman because of their salary-cap strategy. The team is also positioned to offer backup point guard Shaun Livingston an identical long extension contract before the season of 2007-08.

Last season, Kaman, 24, had personal-best averages of 11.9 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.38 blocked shots. In 32.8 minutes, he shot 52.3% from the floor and 77% from the free-throw line. The team’s 2003 first-round draft pick, and sixth overall, has increased his averages each season under Dunleavy’s supervision.
