Broncos are the Belle of the Ball

Shout it from the rooftops, Boise State is for real!

On January 1, the second of the Bowl Championship Series match-ups, the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl, played out like something dreamed up by a Hollywood scriptwriter, a scriptwriter with never ending enthusiasm for the underdog.

In what was, at the very least, one of the most exciting games in the history of the BCS, momentum swayed back and forth like the ocean tides until the very end when the team from Boise rose to a spectacular 43-42 overtime victory.

From the beginning, the Broncos jumped out to a 14-0 lead only to have perennial powerhouse Oklahoma strike back to make the score 14-10. Apparently unfazed, the high-powered BSU offense would score twice to take a 28-10 lead.

At this point, things looked bleak for the Sooners, but being the force that they are, they quickly came back. Twice the Sooners took a lead and twice the Broncos came back. Regulation ended in a 35-35 deadlock bringing about one of college football’s most exciting elements, the unique approach to overtime.

OSU scored first to make the score 42-35. Boise State struck back with a touchdown and rode a trick play to victory with a two-point conversion to win 43-42.

As if that wasn’t enough, after the win, Broncos’ star running back Ian Johnson proposed to his girlfriend, Boise State cheerleader Chrissy Popadics.

The Western Athletic Conference champions wanted a chance to prove to the world that they deserved to be a BCS contender, and despite much outside skepticism they did just that.
