Adjusting to the Movements

One thing to be aware of when beginning to train Capoeira, is that it will take time for the body to get used to the movements. It is normal to experience pain and soreness and should be expected. To most non-brazillians, the body motions required are foreign. Fortunately, with time and practice, the body will adapt.

A beginner will find it important to understand this physical demand, and not to get discouraged by initial awkwardness and fatigue. The mastering of abilities and movements are gained on an individual level. For instance, an Au, an evasive move resembling a cartwheel, should be easily understood by any student with a gymnastics background. But it may not be as easily achieved by someone who has never attempted a cartwheel or may have fear of going upside down. The same rule applies to other aspects of Capoeira, like music. Some people find it difficult to sing infront of others, while some may find difficulty in understanding the rhythms. The cool thing is that Capoeira exposes your weaknesses and forces you to confront them. The determination needed to conquer these hurdles will lead you to becoming a better capoerista.

Attending Class for the fist time, though difficult, will be beneficial. Even when some abilities are questioned, one should not be discouraged. Only time will tell if Capoeria is for you. The physical workout, cultural experience, and comrodery attained are enriching. All it takes is a good teacher, devotion, and a little patience. The rest will come.
